If the soul of Java could be captured in oils, the result would be subtle and great; a balance of light and shade, nuances of warmth and softness amid brush-strokes with an edge of honed steel; there would be highlights of diamond briliance, green flowing into burning gold, and ruby fire touching fathomless azure.

But to begin with there is a clean canvas and a preliminary sketch of a restless, contradictory subject.

The sketch is of an island lying 6 degree to 9 degree below the equator, more than 12,000 kilometres from London, 17,000 kilometres from New York, and 2,600 kilometres from Tokyo. An island which has the fifth largest in the Indonesian archipelago after Kalimantan, Sumatra, Irian Jaya and Sulawesi. Overland on a map of Europe the archipelago stretches from the west coast of Eire to the Ukraine and Sevastopol in the east, from Berlin in the north to Belgrade and Bucharest in the south, covering an area of more than 10 million square kilometres... and even though much of the archipelago is warm sea and ocean, the total land mass is the size of Mexico, and Java the seize of Greece.

Film like Platoon and Apocalypse Now have perpetuated an image of vietnam as a place of war. But what is Vietnam really like, all these year after the fall of Saigon? Justin Wintle went there to find out. His travels took him throught the whole country, from Cao Bang in the deep north to Minh Hai in the far south: a huge adventure that also become a running batlle.Communist propaganda, he found, had to be resisted just as resolutely as western misconceptions.

red tape' - Financial Times

The Australian National Atartic Research Expedition's Station at Heard Island was established in December 1947, and after seven years continuous operation it was closed at the end of 1954.
During seven years 92 men lived and worked at Heard Island and the important scientific results which were produced bear testimony to the vigorous efforts of successive parties of adventurous men who battled against great difficulties on the most isolated island in the world.
Ken Dalziel spent 1953 at Heard Island as Radio Supervisor, and during his stay there wrote the chapters of this book as a series of letters to his two young children. Upon his return to Australia i encouraged him to publish them, for from his simple and kindly narrative young people of today can savour the fascination of this most exciting island and feel something of the spirit of adventure which prompts men to live and work there.Australian is a country which needs young and vigorous people who are not afraid to push out beyond the limits of the comforts of cities and towns. The Antartic is just one of many field which offer an exciting rewarding experience to any person of adventurous spirit.
I am confident that the youth of Australia will be stimulated by this book to recapture the spirit of the early pioneers and march forward bravely to new accomplishments.

Vietnam forms the rugged eastern part of the Indochinese peninsula. Bordering the Asian continent, it looks out on the East Sea and the Pacific, and is situated entirely in the intertropical band, in the centre of Southeast Asia.
Owing to its position of transition and contact between several natural systems and the long geological history of the subsoil, geographical conditions are complex and natural resources highly varied.

The mountainous topography and the East Sea exert a strong influence on Vietnam's environtment. They are also two sources of abundant wealth. Mountains and hills cover three-quarters of Vietnam's territory. The territorial waters of Vietnam are about 1,000,000 sq. and the coast line 3,000 km.

Vietnam is essentially a tropical country with a humid monsoonal climate. The humidity in its atmosphere makes forest the natural vegetation. However, tourist going along Highway i can often see stretches of savanna and grassy hills, the devastated primeval forests.
