Bagong Kussudiardja, bertekad melengkapi pilihan hidupnya sebagai seniman. Ia sejak kecil menggeluti dunia tari dan lukis. Lingkungannya dan orang tuanua ikut membangun dan mendorong Bagong menjadi seniman. Ia lahir di Yogyakarta 9 Oktober 1928. Ayahnya seorang penulis buku dan penyalin buku, abdi dalam Keraton Yogyakarta. Ibunya suka membatik. Bagong kecil pun mulai tumbuh kuncup kesenimanannya. Tembok benteng Keraton, nDalem dan sebagainya dijadikannya media corat-coret pakai arang. Kemudian ia belajar tari kepada kakaknya, Kuswadji Kawandrasusanto. Lalu kepada GPH Tejokusumo, seorang pangeran Keraton Yogyakarta. Jadilah bagong sebagai penari klasik. Ia dikenal sebagai penari spesialis kera. Darah seninya menggejolak dan ia pun 'memberontak'. Diciptakannya tari baru. Kemudian ia mendapat bea siswa untuk belajar tari ke Amerika Serikat. Ia belajar pada penari legendaris Martha Graham. Sesudah itu kerap melanglang dunia belajar tari atai sebagai duta bangsa dalam misi-misi kesenian.

Dan mulailah Bagong dikenal sebagai pencipta tari kreasi baru yang banyak menimbulkan sikap pro dan kontrak di masyarakat. Hingga kini, ratusan tarian lepas dan ratusan tarian fragmen, sendratari, tarian kolosal telah ia buat. Penghargaan pun datang dari mana-mana. Dan, Bagong tetap setia pada pilihan hidupnya sebagai seniman. Ia terus berkarya baik di bidang tari maupun lukis dalam rentang waktu hampir setengah abad terakhir ini. Kali ini ia ingin menuangkan pengalamannya itu lewat tulisan. Ia melengkapi 'sejarah' hidupnya dengan menyusun buku-buku. Buku "Dari Klassik Hingga Kontemporer" ini salah satu buku yang merekam pikiran dan pengalamannya dalam berkesenian.
